In a school which regularly employs corporal punishment its something of a rarity to find a pupil who has never been caned. Add to this the fact that a week has passed without ANY girls being caned, and Headmaster Kennedy has both a dilemma and its solution. Canings must happen frequently in order to maintain discipline and the passage of a whole week without one is simply unacceptable. Amy Cawcliffe is one of the six who have never been caned and is unlucky enough that the other five have surnames beginning with letters after C, so she finds herself at the top of Mr Kennedy's list and summoned to his office for a severe and totally arbitrary caning.
